App of Calumino’s Sensing Solutions

A California attorney with more than 20 years of experience in Silicon Valley, Ben Lyon has advised boards of directors and senior executive teams for international businesses in the biopharmaceutical, telecommunications, software, and nanotechnology spheres. Ben Lyon serves as executive vice president and general counsel for Calumino, an Australia-based technology company founded by two Slovak entrepreneurs who created and developed the leading nanotech+IOT+AI infrared sensors for use in a broad variety of environments..

With uses across various industries, Calumino’s smart sensors provide new dimensions of intelligence and data supporting an endless array of mass market applications, such as fire safety, health care, robotics, gesture sensing people counting, HVAC systems security, transport, automotive, and smart appliances, to name only a few. Calumino has also designed its flagship Calumino Thermal Sensors (CTS) to provide optimal data extraction without compromising privacy. These imaging sensors thus create a new world of non-intrusive data through discreet sensing and mapping of thermal information

Smart-device applications for Calumino’s sensing solutions extend to apparatuses that control systems in smart buildings, which use sensors, microchips, and actuators to automatically adjust lighting, ventilation, heating, air conditioning, and other interior conditions. Calumino products with these capabilities comprise the CTS and Sensor Hub, the latter of which controls and monitors entryways and individual rooms. In addition to directing building systems, these smart thermal sensors can monitor occupancy and track movement throughout. The acquired data can also assist with functions such as space optimization, pest control, and fire safety.

CTS and Sensor Hub offer security solutions and serve the foundation of robust, intelligent systems, that provide intruder and early-stage fire detection in any lighting condition. Calumino can customize these systems to identify intruders in complete darkness, distinguish between animal and human presences, and support building evacuations. Its smart thermal sensors can also augment Internet protocol (IP) cameras, with digital tools that transmits and receives footage via the internet or a local area network.

CTS and Sensor Hub features like thermal imaging and motion detection also have applications to healthcare and elder care. Both products can provide fall detection, and CTS’ imaging capabilities facilitate the creation of devices for monitoring well-being, preventing death or further injury, and advancing quality of care.

Calumino has leveraged innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things sensors to develop Eve, a surveillance system for health, home, and aged care facilities. Prioritizing patient and resident privacy, Eve uses heat-signature detection to collect data on resident well-being and activity patterns. Additionally, these signatures help caretakers provide immediate response to falls and identify water leaks and other hazardous situations. Beyond these areas, Calumino’s thermal smart sensors hold applications in the automotive and industrial sectors.

The products’ diverse applications result from Calumino’s proprietary AI and product-ready computer vision software development kits. These computer vision libraries also offer a framework for creating tailored sensing solutions. Drawing on data extracted from test recordings and evaluations on real-world use, Calumino collaborates with customers to design products attuned to their needs and goals.

Immix Biopharma's IMX 110's Efficacy

San Francisco and Los Angeles-based tech attorney and angel investor Ben Lyon is a board member of the Silicon Valley Association of General Counsel and the California State Bar. Ben Lyon was the VP and general counsel for Immix Biophrama, Inc., which has made big strides in cancer drug development.

Immix Biopharma, Inc. has designed a drug in the first-class combination therapy that induces apoptosis and reduces cancer evolvability and resistance. Known as IMX-110, the drug contains NF-kB/Stat3/pan-kinase inhibitor curcumin and doxorubicin inserted in a nano delivery system to enable tumor penetration. IMX-110 can deliver more payload to tumors and other cell populations because it can be bound to several targeting moieties. Preclinically, the drug has worked for multiple myeloma, colorectal, triple-negative breast, pancreatic, and ovarian tumor models.

IMX-110 was used on a patient with stage-four leiomyosarcoma, and the trial was able to reach the six-month Progression-Free Survival (PFS) time point. The six-month PFS is an essential duration of response, and the stage is a relatively strong indicator of how effective a drug is. The aforementioned patient was treated with doxorubicin and twelve other drugs, but these were not as effective as IMX-110.

He has also been involved in independent international film production and is starting to assist film industries located in Central Europe.

State Bar Disburses Grants to 20 Legal

While serving as general counsel to Kaga FEI America, Inc, Attorney Ben Lyon is also slated to become a Honorary consul for a strategic and emerging European Union nation. With roots in Silicon Valley, and an office in Los Angeles, Ben Lyon is a member of the State Bar of California (the State Bar).

In May, the State Bar gave grant money to 20 organizations to go toward hiring provisionally licensed lawyers (PLLs). The grant money is to augment practices that specialize in addressing urgent civil legal issues faced by Californians who are low-income.

The Legal Services Trust Fund Commission selected the 20 organizations after a competitive process based on a rubric the commission devised and the Board of Trustees approved. In sum, estimated awards will total $1.4 million in 2021-2022.

Seventeen PLLs will be hired to work in 43 California counties with 30 of these counties being in rural locations or having little access to legal aid. Three PLLs have been allocated for state-wide support services. The expectation is that this aid will go toward helping residents living in rural areas, and to offer legal services to those impacted by COVID.
